I've enjoyed all seasons episodes as the storyline, the plots, the directing, the sound, camera-angle where all very impressive. I can hardly understand why the show is discontinuing or didn't draw as much audience or positive reviews as the much compared Sopranos.Taking a closer look I feel that there are some significant differences with the Sopranos. There, the show had a whole range of heavy duty actors like James Gandolfini, Edie Falco, Aida Turturro or Michael Imperioli. The Wire starts out with mostly unknown actors, not all of them I found a very good choice.Wendell Pierce was one of the most outstanding guys for me. Fantastic character, all the right lines, tones and wit. And damn funny. Michael K. Williams unforgettable as Omar Little. Wood Harris and Idris Elba where also entertaining to see. I also enjoyed Felicia Pearson as Snoop. I don't think anyone couldv relayed the script so good with street wise talk as she.But The Wire is being pulled by Dominic West as the main man. And im not convinced of his capabilities as an actor. Its the little details that reveal he is not born in the USA. His script delivery, in contrast with Pearson and Pierce, is unconvincing. The times he has to act he is completely drunk is laughable at times, so silly and unbelievable.Lance Reddick as Cedric Daniels was also very badly casted. The man has only one look:the empty stare. His movement and walking is like robocop so wooden and hokey. His lines spoken in an unconvincing way. No emotion, just nothing. Corey Parker Robinson, Dominick Lombardozzi, Larry Gilliard Jr., Jamie Hector as the new kingpin...they where dreadful, wooden and uninspiring.The other problem with the actors, with the gangsters specifically, is their looks. Everyone of them look like they just came off the catwalk so fresh, good looking, toned with good dental care. I don't mind a few good looking actors but 90% of them? Being grown up in tough Gettos? That doesn't come over as very realistic. Is it by chance the guy with a huge scar (Michael Williams) or fat Proposition Joe (Robert F. Chew, fantastic!) get the most positive reviews over their fellow cast members? In the Sopranos, the casting was done superbly, with wise guys weared out by the tough life, portrayed by actors who have proved their mettle.Then there are a few continuation mistakes, like the homicide unit around the breathing(!) corpse of Stringer Bell. If you fast forward or rewind with view its very funny to see his stomach going up and down.Or the sloppy plot around Omars supposed killing of a woman inside Old Face Andres shop in season 4. Kima reported the shop had "high end surveillance cameras". How come the detectives didn't review the tapes of those to see who killed who? And all Omar had to do to counter Andres allegation, is come up with a witness such a Renaldo, to prove he wasn't there. End of the case, the locking up, and the plot. I do hope David Simon makes a new series, and I hope to see Wendell Pierce in many productions. But for a continuation of The Wire I hope they leave Dominic West and all other pretty boys at home, and get some real actors. In the end, The Wire is good and very entertaining TV, its up there with the best, but its not as good as The Sopranos, period.

Volume 1: When you have police who say "c'mon, let's go out and break some heads" and behave as it's 1959, it it simply demonstrates the writers inability to create characters both mean, aggressive and believable. When there is so much real brutality that cops CAN and DO get away with, why show stupid unbelievable behavior that cops CAN'T get away with.. Cops like that wouldn't last 5 minutes. Show them mean when THEY CAN GET AWAY WITH IT might have actually meant these vaunted creators of the show knew what they were talking about. . Another Hollywood-type cop show but showing crime and degradation you cant show on network. Yawn, yawn, yawn.Part of the show creates these neaderthal, cookie-cutter moron cops (one accidentally discharges his handgun in the office!!!). That part is just silly... Add to that THE DEPUTY COMMISSIONER, CHIEF OF POLICE, etc. who appear "confounded" over the notion that a neighborhood gang would kill a witness who testified against one of the gang members who was later found "not guilty." Why would they do that, one says in true "white" astonishment. Apparently that degree of logic - one which helps any ghetto teenager to recognize- is too "deep" for theose old white higher - ups, and THIS TYPE OF COOKIE CUTTER character creation, along with little or diluted chemistry between McNulty and his black partner or the lesbian (a characer completely 2- dimensional); leave us at first wanting more, than quickly moving into "do i really want to more?r. It takes advantage of all the modern hip-hop notions that we've all hardened ourselves to, but with all it's advantages for a good show, it fails to create and relies on reharvested old formula. Too bad. I'll watch a few more episodes maybe. If iu change my mind, I'll say so. Some of the political developments are good, everyone covering their butt, etc, was well done. The nephew/uncle relationshipo is good, but Great? no.OI will say one thing: Whoever their publicist is should get a raise: never have a seen such cookie-cutter mediocrity get such rave reviews. To compare this with Sopranos or Six-Feet Under is to compare 1950's war movies with Saving Private Ryan or Thin Red Line.

I got given the first season of this on DVD after expressing disbelief at the incredible hype going on about it in a certain UK newspaper. I was told that, once I'd watched it, I'd see what all the fuss was about. Well, I finally finished season 1. I won't be bothering with season 2.This is an average procedural, nothing more or less, stuffed with an array of interchangeable and forgettable characters (I couldn't for the life of me remember who was who, and soon began not to care) and clichés galore. You want the the maverick cop who plays by his own rules, speaks his mind, pisses of his stuffed-shirt, officious superiors but gets results? Whose dedication to his job has cost him his marriage and left him with a drink habit (signalled by occasional swigs at a bottle)? Well, one can never get enough of THIS sort of character, obviously, so bring him on, have him played woodenly and be done with it. You get the usual weary battery of petty, lazy, fat and/or balding officials who get in the way, just for contrast, and they all but ask for his badge and his gun and/or give him 48 hours.And so it dragged on, the self-conscious dialogue dribbling forth. You want the beautiful and ballsy lesbian cop expounding non-sensically on her reasons for being a cop to her (fortuitously gorgeous) lesbian friends? Want to see a fat cop enter his superior's office and start, for some reason, to talk about how he was masturbating in the bath? And, no, his superior does not, as in any real world, ask him to get out or get to the point, but merely smiles and nods indulgently ('cos he's an a-hole, too, geddit?). The cringe moments come thick and fast, one of my favourites being the moment that the cop I came to call Morgan Freeman interviewed the Tart-with-a-Heart (another cliché) at his desk, conveniently littered with the miniature furniture he makes (contrived plot point, there)and for some reason didn't see fit to clear away. He tells her to choose one that she likes and, yes, she chooses the cradle with the baby in it and coos, ickily.Lovers of clichés will also be able to spot who's about to get wasted in advance. If you can't....well, hand in your gun and badge.

Chose to binge this as soon as i finished The Sopranoes and to say the least i am not disappointed. As good as The Sopranos and i didn't think that was even possible!
